Kolkata: The long-running standoff between Nabanna and Raj Bhavan appears to have taken a pause, as the 2025 state budget session is set to begin with Governor CV Anand Bose’s address. Speaker Biman Banerjee confirmed on Friday that the governor will deliver the customary opening speech, signaling a return to tradition after last year’s controversy.

In 2024, amid tensions between the state government and the governor’s office, the budget session proceeded without the governor’s address, breaking protocol and drawing sharp criticism from the opposition. The absence of the governor’s speech became a political flashpoint, with opposition parties accusing the ruling government of disrespecting constitutional norms.

This year, however, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government appears keen to avoid further conflict. Nabanna has formally invited Governor Bose to deliver the inaugural speech, a move seen as an effort to maintain decorum and prevent another political storm.

Despite the official confirmation, political circles remain abuzz with speculation over what might unfold on February 12. While the state government has extended the olive branch, the governor’s remarks on the day could still set the tone for the session. With the opposition waiting for any misstep, all eyes will be on the state assembly as the budget session kicks off.
