New Delhi: The Union Budget 2025 is set to bring significant announcements for the Indian Railways, with the Narendra Modi-led government reportedly increasing its allocation to around ₹3 lakh crore. This comes in the wake of a series of rail accidents in 2024, which led to sharp criticism of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and demands for improved safety and infrastructure.

Despite yearly increases in funding, opposition parties have raised concerns about inefficiency in implementing projects and ensuring safety. However, the central government is moving ahead with a substantial hike in railway funding in this year’s budget, which will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.
The previous allocation for the railways in the July 2024 budget stood at a record ₹2.62 lakh crore, of which 80% has already been utilized. Experts predict a 15-20% increase in this year’s allocation, pushing the budget close to ₹3 lakh crore. This funding will focus on upgrading rail infrastructure, enhancing passenger safety, and modernizing services.
