Haryana Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam on Wednesday reiterated the state government’s commitment to upgrading sports infrastructure across Haryana, days after the tragic death of a 16-year-old national-level basketball player. The teenager lost his life when a basketball pole collapsed during practice, falling directly onto his chest. The incident has sparked debate over the quality and maintenance of sporting facilities in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Gautam expressed deep sorrow, calling the boy “the son of the entire nation” and described the incident as “unfortunate”. He assured that the government is taking the matter seriously and will ensure that such incidents are avoided through stricter oversight and timely infrastructural repairs.

Gautam revealed that just a month earlier the state had sanctioned ₹114 crore to the Public Works Department (PWD) for the upkeep of 92 stadiums. “The tender process has already begun, and some work is underway. With additional investment, facility conditions will naturally improve,” he said. He added that officials had been instructed to report infrastructure issues immediately and either replace faulty structures or temporarily close unsafe spaces.

The minister stressed that Haryana’s aim is to provide athletes with “the best possible facilities”. The state, known for producing top wrestlers, boxers and shooters, has been expanding training centres and sports academies in recent years. The recent accident, however, has brought renewed focus to routine safety checks and management accountability.
