Chennai, Tamil Nadu: World Chess Champion D Gukesh has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor. In response to the accolade, Gukesh expressed his gratitude and pledged to continue striving for excellence in the game of chess.
In a statement, the 17-year-old prodigy said, “I am very humbled and honored to know that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the prestigious Khel Ratna Award for me and for recognizing my achievements. I thank the government of India, PM Modi, and Union Sports Minister for the recognition.”
The award acknowledges Gukesh’s remarkable accomplishments in the world of chess, including becoming the youngest player to break into the top 10 FIDE rankings and achieving multiple international victories that have brought glory to India.
Gukesh highlighted the motivational impact of the award on his career, adding, “This award will motivate me to work harder and achieve more laurels for the country.”
