Workshop on Environmental Journalism Promoting Mission LiFE

Kolkata, Nov 27: A workshop on environmental journalism was organized today under the Mission LiFE programme by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal. The event emphasized the role of students in shaping a sustainable future, with 150 students from leading schools and colleges actively participating.

Dr. Kalyan Rudra, Chairman of WBPCB, highlighted the workshop's focus on students as they represent the nation's future. He stressed the growing importance of environmental awareness in the modern world and encouraged the youth to propagate the principles of Mission LiFE for societal welfare. "Students must not only learn but also take these ideas forward to benefit society," he remarked.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Dept of Environment and Member Secretary, WBPCB, addressed pressing environmental challenges, including the critical issue of stubble burning. He explained that GIS monitoring cells are actively identifying stubble-burning hotspots, enabling swift action and detailed reporting. "As these efforts continue, the incidents are steadily decreasing," he noted.

He also underscored the value of educating students about sustainable practices. He praised journalism as a medium to amplify these messages, urging participants to use platforms like YouTube and Instagram reels to spread awareness. "Through innovative communication, students can become ambassadors of change," he said.

The WBPCB announced additional initiatives, such as a dedicated helpline and a robust feedback mechanism to address public concerns and devise solutions.

The workshop concluded with a strong call to action for students to adopt and advocate eco-friendly practices, solidifying their role in advancing the Mission LiFE agenda.
