A political storm erupted on Saturday as BJP’s Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating a “scripted political drama” around the suspension of Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. The MLA was in Murshidabad on Saturday participating in a ceremony linked to the Babri Masjid reconstruction when Sarkar launched a series of sharp allegations.
According to Sarkar, Humayun Kabir’s suspension is not a disciplinary action but part of a larger electoral strategy. He claimed that Mamata Banerjee “knows she has already lost significant Hindu support” and now fears discontent among Muslim voters as well. To manage both sides, he alleged, she is using Kabir to influence a section of Muslim voters while simultaneously projecting a tough stance to appeal to Hindu voters.

Sarkar suggested that the Trinamool Congress may even rebuild ties with Kabir after the elections if it proves politically advantageous. He further hinted at a possible CPM–Humayun Kabir understanding in Murshidabad in the months ahead.
The BJP MP also questioned why Kolkata Mayor and senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim faced no action for past communal remarks. He recalled that even when Kabir earlier stated that the “70% population could drown the remaining 30% in the Bhagirathi,” no disciplinary step was taken. Likewise, he cited an old speech by Hakim where he allegedly called birth in another religion a “sin” and urged conversions. “Mamata Banerjee ignored all of that,” Sarkar said, accusing her of playing selective politics.

He argued that Kabir’s recent comments calling the Chief Minister an “RSS agent” and the TMC’s counter-actions form part of a coordinated spectacle. “This is nothing but a planned drama,” Sarkar said. “The brother is promoting the sister, and the sister is promoting the brother. It is all an election script.”
