The West Bengal Transport Department is set to launch night bus services in Kolkata this week, addressing the long-standing transportation needs of late-night commuters. A few hundred buses will be pressed into service, operating on specified routes throughout the night.
According to transport department sources, the initiative comes in response to the growing demand for affordable public transport options during late hours. Currently, late-night travelers, including those arriving at or departing from the city airport, and passengers from Howrah and Sealdah railway stations, rely heavily on taxis and private vehicles due to the lack of public transport options.
The new night bus service will provide much-needed connectivity at normal fare rates. "A large number of people travel late in the night, especially due to late-night flights and long-distance train schedules. This service will benefit them immensely," an official from the transport department stated.
To ensure the safety and security of passengers, the Kolkata Police has assured that adequate arrangements will be in place. Senior officers, who are usually on night patrol, will monitor the operations and address any security concerns.
