By Rupanjal Chauhan: The new hit-and-run laws have sparked truckers’ protest resulting into a ‘chakka-jam’ (traffic jam) across the country on 1st January, Monday.

According to the new law, individuals accused of fleeing and not reporting a catastrophic accident can now face a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. Previously, under Section 304A of the IPC (causing death by negligence), those convicted could be imprisoned for up to two years

The bus operators and truckers state that no one causes accidents deliberately and drivers fear being beaten by a mob if they attempt to help the injured, calling for withdrawal of the “black law”

Drivers enforced a ‘chakka jam’ by putting obstacles on the roads of Pithampur Highway in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. Moreover, truck drivers blocked NH-2 in Hooghly district, West Bengal yesterday to protest the law.

Raipur, Chhattisgarh’s capital, is also seeing similar protests where distressed drivers staged a rally against the new law impacting the movement of around 1,000 buses.
