Meghalaya: state police seized Heroin worth Rs six crores at Khliehriat
Meghalaya government is working on bringing more stringent laws for its crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, making it difficult for illicit drug vendors to get bail under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, of 1985.
By Rupanjal Chauhan: Meghalaya police seized Rs six crores worth of heroin from a hardcore interstate drug trafficker along with a car in east Jaintia hills, Khliehriat on 1st January, Monday.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, praised the Director General- Dr. L R Bishnoi and the Meghalaya police force successful catch on New Year’s Day on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
In May 2023, Paul Lyngdoh, Meghalaya’s Social Welfare minister claimed that 7 percent of the state’s population were drug addicts. He also revealed that among the 2.5 lakh drug addicts, 30,000 of them are women according to the official reports. Lyngdoh reported that the majority of them inject narcotic substances like heroin and brown sugar.
