BY A STAFF REPORTER: A B.Tech (Hons.) and PhD from IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Biswa Nath Chatterji is a distinguished academician and researcher in the field of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering. He served IIT Kharagpur in various administrative roles, including Head of the Department, Coordinator of the Quality Improvement Program, and Dean of Academic Affairs. Since 2005, Professor Chatterji has been serving as an Emeritus Professor at B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology, Kolkata. He has a strong passion for both basic and applied research, having guided over 50 scholars.

 His current research interests include pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision, watermarking, and steganography, focusing on image analysis, motion analysis, and low-level vision. Prof. Chatterji was instrumental in introducing these fields at IIT Kharagpur, establishing an active Computer Vision Laboratory, and launching related courses at the B.Tech and M.Tech levels leading to one M.Tech course Automation and Computer Vision in the Department of E&ECE, IIT Kharagpur. His research also featured as one of 75 innovations of IIT Kharagpur during India’s 75th year of independence initiated by the Office of the Prime Minister. A Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, and several other professional societies, he has been honored with 15 national awards for his academic and research contributions, including the prestigious Sri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Award in 1983. He has published five books, several book chapters and more than 400 papers in reputed international/national Journals and Conference Proceedings.

In recognition of his exceptional contribution to academic excellence and significant achievements as the pioneering researcher, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has decided to honour him with the Life Fellow Award on the occasion of the 70th Convocation of the Institute, held on 30th December 2024.
