Dr. Kalyan Rudra Highlights Chipko Movement’s Legacy
WBPCB observed 50 years of the Chipko movement, with Dr. Kalyan Rudra reflecting on its legacy and emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts to protect the environment for future generations.
The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) commemorated 50 years of the Chipko movement on Monday, highlighting its historical significance in environmental conservation.
The program featured speeches by Dr. Kalyan Rudra, Chairman of WBPCB, Dr. Rajesh Kumar, IPS, Principal Secretary, Department of Environment and Member Secretary, WBPCB and Mr. Subrata Ghosh, OSD, WBPCB.Dr. Rudra discussed the Chipko movement's legacy, where villagers hugged trees to prevent deforestation, and its relevance today.
“From past to future, the fight to protect the environment will continue like this,” Dr. Rudra remarked, urging collective action to address modern ecological challenges.
Certificates and prizes were also distributed to the winners of the "Colour Poster Competition," which encouraged artistic expression on environmental themes.
The event concluded with a focus on the importance of grassroots movements in safeguarding nature.
