Kolkata, West Bengal: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement of a pay hike for doctors in West Bengal has drawn mixed reactions from the medical community. While the salary revision has been acknowledged as necessary, some doctors argue that the focus should have been on systemic reforms in healthcare rather than just financial compensation.
Speaking on the issue, Aniket Mahato, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College, expressed dissatisfaction with the scope of discussions held. “In this meeting, there should have been a discussion on the healthcare system, but it did not happen. This meeting is not successful,” he said.
Mahato emphasized that doctors were not demanding a salary increase but rather improvements in healthcare infrastructure and working conditions. “If you look at the salary structure of junior doctors, residents, and PG trainees in the country, you will notice that their salaries in West Bengal are low. So, this hike is natural. We did not demand a salary increase. We want improvement in the healthcare system,” he added.
