BY A STAFF REPORTER: 26th January is the 73rd Republic Day of India. This day is observed every year since 1950. The President of India inaugurated this day on the Rajpath of Delhi. But do you know the importance of this day?

The first Indian Constitution was formally adopted on 26 January 1950 and the event is commemorated on Republic Day. India gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, but the Indian Constitution did not come into effect until January 26, 1950. Its objective was to make India a sovereign state.

On this day the President of India confers Paramvir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra and Veer Chakra to brave soldiers and Padma Award is given to deserving citizens of the country. After this day's ceremony the Beating the Retreat ceremony takes place. A special parade of the Republic is held on this day, which is witnessed by millions of people.
