BY A STAFF REPORTER:  New Year is the time or day on which a new calendar year begins. But do you know that it is observed all over the world in different ways, on different days? Let's find out what those days are.

Chinese New Year: Chinese New Year is a major holiday in Greater China. Chinese New Year is celebrated for about a month. The first day of Chinese New Year begins with the sighting of the new moon between January 21 and February 20. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries in North America and Europe where significant numbers of Chinese immigrants live.

Gudi Parba: Gudi Parba is one of the festivals of Hindus and Marathas. A procession is held a day before this festival. This festival is usually celebrated between the end of March and the beginning of April.

Bohag Bihu: Bohag Bihu is one of the biggest festivals of Assam. The festival of Bohag Bihu is named after the first month of Assam's new year. Assam's new year begins with this festival. People of Assam dress up in local clothes to celebrate this Bihu. This bihu is observed for seven days. There are various types of cooking every day.

Islamic New Year: Islamic New Year is also known as Hijri New Year. This day marks the beginning of the new Islamic lunar calendar. Islamic calendar has 354 or 355 days. It is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. It begins with Muharram, the second holiest month after Ramadan. This year ends with Dhul al-Hijr. This year the new Islamic year will begin in the second week of August.

Nowroz: Nowroz is the Iranian New Year celebrated according to the Iranian solar calendar.‎ The festival is also commonly referred to as the "Persian New Year". Nowruz is the national day of Persian, Kurdistan, Luristini, Baluchi, Aizri and Baluchi people. Nowruz is mainly celebrated among the Iranian nation and the wider Iranian population.
