Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for instituting Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, calling it a measure that acknowledges the suffering of those who lost loved ones during the violence of 1947. He described the day as a source of relief for families who endured displacement and personal loss during the partition of India.

Adityanath also used the occasion to level criticism at the Congress party, alleging that its policies at the time contributed to the expulsion of Hindus and Sikhs from West Pakistan. He said that millions were killed during the riots and claimed that the then government failed to provide adequate relief or make arrangements for the citizenship of displaced people.

The Chief Minister’s remarks were made as part of statewide observances marking the annual remembrance day, which was declared by the Union government in 2021. The commemoration is intended to honour the resilience of those affected while serving as a reminder of the human cost of communal violence.
