US Tariff Hike Could Benefit Indian Exporters, Says Economist Rajiv Kumar

By A Staff Reporter

New Delhi – Economist and former Niti Aayog Vice President Rajiv Kumar has pointed out a potential silver lining for India amid the US tariff hikes announced by former President Donald Trump. He explained that while some Indian exports may face higher tariffs, competitors in Mexico, Canada, and China could be hit even harder, giving Indian exporters a competitive edge.

“It will be a mixed impact,” Kumar said. “On one hand, Indian exporters will be adversely affected by higher tariffs on certain goods as President Trump has indicated. However, at the same time, he is imposing much higher tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. This could indirectly benefit Indian exporters in the US market.”

Kumar emphasized that the situation could present an opportunity for India’s trade sector. “Since key competitors will be at a greater disadvantage, Indian exporters may find new opportunities to expand their market share in the United States,” he added.
