PATNA: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has expressed disapproval over reports suggesting that the Indian cricket team might not travel to Pakistan for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Yadav criticized the apparent politicization of sports, arguing that such decisions should prioritize the spirit of the game.
"Involving politics into sports is not a good thing," Yadav remarked, emphasizing the importance of maintaining neutrality and fairness in international sporting events.
He questioned the reasoning behind India's hesitation to play in Pakistan, pointing out that sports often transcend political boundaries. Drawing a parallel to global sporting events, Yadav said, "Doesn't everyone participate in the Olympics? Why shouldn't India go there (Pakistan)? What is the objection?"
In a pointed comment, the RJD leader referred to past diplomatic engagements, saying, "If the Prime Minister can go there to have biryani - then it's good. If the Indian team travels, why is this not good?"
Yadav’s statement reflects growing debates about the intersection of politics and sports, particularly in the context of strained India-Pakistan relations. While bilateral cricketing ties between the two nations have been suspended for years due to geopolitical tensions, they continue to meet in ICC tournaments and Asia Cup events.
His comments have sparked conversations about the need for consistent policies in international sports and whether sports diplomacy could play a role in easing tensions. As discussions around the Champions Trophy unfold, Yadav's remarks underscore the complexities of balancing national interests with global sportsmanship.
