New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear a batch of petitions on December 12, challenging specific provisions of the Places of Worship (Special Provision) Act, 1991. The Act currently prohibits the filing of lawsuits to reclaim a place of worship or to seek a change in its character from what it was on August 15, 1947.

A special bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justices PV Sanjay Kumar, and KV Vishwanathan will hear the case at 3.30 pm. The petitioners have argued that the Act, which prevents litigation regarding the ownership or character of religious sites, violates fundamental rights.

The outcome of this case could have significant implications on the legal status of places of worship across the country and the ongoing debates about religious sites and their histories. The Supreme Court's decision on this matter is being closely watched.
