New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea filed by Punjab MP Amritpal Singh challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in 2023. The Court, however, granted him liberty to approach the jurisdictional High Court for the same relief.

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria heard the matter and noted that while it would not directly intervene in the case, the High Court should be directed to take up Singh’s plea promptly.

The bench observed that the High Court must decide on Amritpal Singh’s petition within six weeks, considering the prolonged period of his detention under the NSA. However, the Supreme Court has not yet issued a formal order to that effect, as it has sought the presence of the counsel representing the Central government before proceeding further.
