New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted the Jharkhand government seven days to notify the Saranda forest region as a wildlife sanctuary, expressing concern over the prolonged inaction on the matter.
During the hearing, the bench observed that it did not wish to send any government official to jail but made it clear that the state must act promptly. “We do not want to send an officer to jail, but the decision must be taken within a week,” the court stated, emphasizing the ecological importance of the region.
Located in West Singhbhum district, the Saranda forest is considered one of India’s most biodiverse regions, home to several endangered species and rich in natural resources. Environmentalists have long advocated for its declaration as a protected sanctuary to curb illegal mining and deforestation.
