Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has weighed in on the recent deportations of Indian migrants from the United States, emphasizing that India has a clear responsibility to accept its returning citizens. Tharoor pointed out that this wave of deportations is neither new nor unexpected, citing past instances across multiple U.S. administrations.

“This is not the first deportation and won’t be the last,” Tharoor remarked. “Even before Trump, during the Biden regime, there were already 1,100 Indians sent back from America.” He further highlighted that U.S. authorities estimate around 7.25 lakh undocumented Indians are currently residing in the country and are eligible for deportation.

In the past four years, U.S. immigration enforcement has reportedly arrested around 2 lakh Indians attempting to cross borders from Mexico and Canada. Tharoor acknowledged the scale of the issue but maintained that there is no ambiguity in India's duty toward its citizens. “If they are citizens of India, we have an obligation to take them back, there is no debate about it,” he asserted.
