New Delhi, June 4, 2025 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday provided a major update on the city's efforts to eliminate legacy waste, announcing significant progress in the cleanup of the Okhla landfill site—one of the capital's largest and oldest dumping grounds.

Speaking at the site, CM Gupta said, “This landfill, which once spread over 62 acres and rose to a height of 60 meters, has now been reduced to about 30 meters.” She revealed that around 57 metric tons of garbage have already been removed, leaving approximately 30 metric tons still to be cleared.

Highlighting the environmental restoration efforts, Gupta added, “After cleaning such a large area, we planted 8,000 bamboo plants here. This not only helps with soil stabilization but also contributes to creating a green urban landscape.”

Setting a clear timeline for the project’s completion, the Chief Minister declared, “We have set a target to fully clean the Okhla landfill site by March 2026.”7

The move is part of Delhi’s broader strategy to tackle solid waste management and reduce pollution from legacy landfill sites. Similar efforts are also underway at Bhalswa and Ghazipur dumpsites, where large-scale biomining and waste segregation projects are being implemented.
