Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday sharpened his criticism of the Election Commission (EC), reiterating allegations of “vote chori” (vote theft) and accusing the institution of failing in its constitutional duty.
In a pointed remark, Gandhi likened the EC to a watchman who not only remained awake but also protected those responsible for alleged electoral malpractice. “The election watchman stayed awake, watched the theft, and protected the thieves,” he said, reviving his long-standing charge that elections under the present system are compromised.
The Congress leader’s comments come amid continued opposition concerns over electoral transparency, including questions raised in the past about electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter rolls. Gandhi has consistently argued that the electoral process is being manipulated to favor the ruling dispensation, framing it as an attack on democracy itself.
