Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Election Commission during the Winter Session of Parliament, alleging that the poll body has been “completely captured” and is failing to address serious irregularities in voter lists across multiple states. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi accused the Commission of ignoring evidence presented by the Opposition on duplicate voters and cross-state voting.
Gandhi said the Election Commission has not responded to basic questions he raised regarding anomalies in electoral rolls. “Election Commission has not told me why this lady’s picture has appeared on the polling list. They have not told me why lakhs and lakhs of duplicate voters exist. They have not told me why a BJP leader is coming from Uttar Pradesh to vote in Haryana,” he said.
He asserted that these issues are “straightforward questions” backed by proof, yet the Commission has offered no explanation. Gandhi alleged that this silence reflects the “complete capture of the Election Commission by the people across the aisle.”
Referring to the Special Integrated Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Gandhi claimed that despite the clean-up exercise, “1.2 lakh duplicate photos exist in the voting list.” He further said such discrepancies were not limited to Bihar but had also been identified in Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Gandhi added that he was “absolutely certain” that similar practices were being used to influence electoral outcomes in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states. His remarks triggered strong objections from Treasury benches, with BJP MPs accusing him of undermining constitutional institutions without evidence.
