Wayanad, Kerala: Campaigning in the Wayanad constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha bypolls, Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra underscored the substantial agricultural potential of the region, emphasizing the need for development in infrastructure, food processing, and crop marketing strategies to support local farmers. Addressing local issues, she outlined how targeted support could enhance Wayanad’s agricultural output and improve the livelihoods of farmers, who currently struggle with declining crop prices and debt burdens.
“This land has immense potential,” Gandhi said, reflecting on the possibilities of Wayanad's fertile landscape. She noted that with better facilities, marketing strategies, and food parks, the area could experience significant growth in the agriculture sector. “Just think if there were proper facilities and good strategies for marketing and packaging these crops, and if proper food parks were created here, how much difference it would make,” she continued, suggesting that focused improvements could catalyze economic progress in Wayanad and benefit the community at large.
Gandhi highlighted the challenges farmers are currently facing, particularly the plummeting prices of crops that have left many agricultural workers in financial distress. According to her, many farmers have been forced to take loans and are finding it increasingly difficult to repay them due to the decreasing returns on their produce. She emphasized that, instead of providing adequate support for the farming community, existing policies have left them with few resources to weather economic challenges.
