Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra today on a significant State Visit to Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over three decades. His arrival was met with a special and warm reception, as Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama personally welcomed him at the airport, where a ceremonial guard of honour was presented.
The extraordinary gesture by President Mahama underscores the longstanding and cordial relations between India and Ghana, rooted in shared democratic values, historical connections, and growing cooperation across sectors. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the visit as a historic milestone, further reinforcing the two nations’ strategic partnership.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Mahama to discuss avenues for deepening collaboration in areas such as trade, education, health, renewable energy, and technology. India has been a key development partner for Ghana, contributing to capacity-building projects, scholarships, and infrastructural support.
The visit is also symbolic of India’s renewed diplomatic and economic outreach to Africa under its “Africa Engagement” policy. It is anticipated that the leaders will sign multiple agreements aimed at fostering inclusive development and strengthening people-to-people ties.
