New Delhi — The Government of India has moved to extend President’s Rule in the state of Manipur for an additional six months, effective from August 13, 2025. The statutory resolution, introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, was formally admitted in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

The resolution reads: “This House approves the continuation of the proclamation issued by the President on February 13, 2025 in respect of Manipur under Article 356 of the Constitution, for a period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025.”

President’s Rule in Manipur was first imposed on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9. The state had been facing continued political uncertainty and administrative challenges, prompting central intervention.

Under Article 356(3) of the Indian Constitution, President’s Rule can be extended in six-month increments with parliamentary approval, up to a maximum duration of three years.
