GUWAHATI, Sept 6 — Senior Congress leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s likely visit to Manipur should be regarded as the beginning of a longer process to restore peace in the state, rather than as the culmination of efforts.
Speaking on the sidelines of a programme in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi remarked, “We cannot say that normalcy has returned to Manipur. There is no elected government, so Modi’s visit should not be seen as the end goal.” He added that the visit should mark the start of a comprehensive initiative to address the unrest and ensure stability in the region.
The northeastern state has faced prolonged tensions and episodes of violence in recent months, with civil society groups and political parties calling for sustained dialogue, rehabilitation, and reconciliation measures. Gogoi stressed that the situation requires consistent engagement from both the central and state leadership, alongside support from local communities.
