New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday outlined an ambitious roadmap for India’s space sector, calling on startups and private enterprises to play a central role in scaling up the nation’s capabilities. Addressing the nation on the occasion of National Space Day, the Prime Minister said India should aspire to achieve 50 rocket launches annually within the next five years, compared to the current average of 5–6 launches per year.
Modi emphasized that the push for greater participation from the private sector was vital to unlocking India’s potential in the global space economy. He said the government envisions the creation of at least five unicorns in the space sector during the same period, reflecting the opportunities available for innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship.
The Prime Minister’s remarks build on his Independence Day address earlier this month, where he stressed the need for self-reliance across multiple sectors. In space, he noted, increased domestic capacity would not only enhance India’s standing internationally but also provide greater opportunities for scientific research, industry growth, and employment.
