Alipurduar, West Bengal – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address in Alipurduar, underscored the transformational impact of the Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project, calling it a “revolutionary step” toward building a gas-based economy and reshaping the energy infrastructure of Eastern India.
“All of you are familiar with the Urja Ganga Gas Pipeline Project,” the Prime Minister told the crowd. “This project is a revolutionary step in the gas-based economy. Under this policy, gas pipeline has been connected to Eastern India,” he said, emphasizing that regions long deprived of clean energy infrastructure are now witnessing development and industrial revival.
The Urja Ganga project, originally launched to extend the gas pipeline network into states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, aims to provide cleaner cooking fuel to households, promote the use of CNG in transport, and fuel industrial growth with piped natural gas.

PM Modi highlighted the wider socioeconomic benefits of the project. “With all these efforts of the Indian government, new employment opportunities are also being generated,” he noted, pointing to the surge in demand for skilled and semi-skilled labor in sectors now benefitting from improved energy access.
“Gas-based industries have also got a boost from this,” he added, underlining how the availability of affordable and clean energy is encouraging industrial investments, reducing dependence on polluting fuels, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
“Now we are moving towards an India where energy is cheap, clean, and easily available to all,” the Prime Minister declared, framing the project as central to his government’s long-term vision of inclusive development and energy self-reliance.
