Georgetown, Guyana: In a momentous speech during a Special Session of the Guyanese Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the historical ties and shared struggles of India and Guyana, emphasizing their joint commitment to democracy.
"In the last 200-250 years, India and Guyana have witnessed similar kinds of slavery and struggles. During the fight for freedom, so many people sacrificed their lives both here and in India," he said.
The Prime Minister lauded the resilience of both nations, noting their progress from colonial subjugation to becoming vibrant democracies on the global stage. "Today, both countries are strengthening democracy in the world," he remarked.
Addressing the Parliamentarians, Modi expressed deep respect for Guyana’s history and people. "In the Guyanese Parliament, I am greeting you all on behalf of 140 crore people of India," he said, reinforcing the bond between the two nations.
This address comes as part of PM Modi’s broader agenda to enhance India’s ties with the Caribbean region, focusing on shared cultural heritage, economic partnerships, and mutual cooperation on global issues.
Modi’s speech resonated with the historic significance of Guyana, a nation shaped by the migration of indentured laborers, many of whom were of Indian origin. His remarks highlighted the enduring connection between the two countries and their collective journey toward freedom and prosperity.
