Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the transformative shift in India’s criminal justice system while addressing a programme in Chandigarh commemorating the successful implementation of three new criminal laws. He underscored the departure from colonial-era penal systems that, for decades, shaped India’s legal framework.
“Decades after Independence, our laws were revolving around the same penal mindset. Over time, efforts were made to introduce some changes in laws, but their characteristic remained the same,” said PM Modi, emphasizing the need for a justice system aligned with modern values and aspirations.
The Prime Minister lauded the new criminal laws as a significant step in making the legal system more transparent, equitable, and accessible. He explained that these laws were crafted to address the evolving needs of the nation, focusing on delivering swift and fair justice while ensuring the protection of fundamental rights.

PM Modi’s remarks come amid a broader push by the government to overhaul outdated laws and streamline legal processes. The newly implemented laws are aimed at reducing procedural delays, addressing systemic inefficiencies, and enhancing accountability within the justice system.
The programme in Chandigarh brought together legal experts, policymakers, and officials to discuss the impact of these reforms and their implementation across states. PM Modi expressed hope that these changes would mark a new chapter in India’s legal history, ensuring justice is not only delivered but also seen to be delivered.
The initiative is being viewed as part of the government’s larger vision of modernizing institutions and creating a framework that reflects India’s post-Independence identity and aspirations
