Mumbai: As Maharashtra heads toward the 2024 elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the stage at a Mumbai rally, strongly criticizing the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. In his address, he alleged that the MVA had become "enslaved to appeasement politics," a strategy that, according to him, undermines national unity and public sentiment. He argued that the MVA's stance on multiple key issues showcases a misalignment with public interests and national values.
Highlighting several contentious topics, PM Modi pointed to the MVA's opposition to the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, a project that has been supported by a large section of Indian society. “They objected to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and even went as far as using the term 'saffron terrorism' in a bid to secure votes,” he remarked, criticizing what he described as a divisive political strategy. He also accused the alliance of disrespecting prominent historical figures, including Veer Savarkar, who holds significance in Maharashtra's socio-political history.
Another key issue PM Modi addressed was the alliance's recent resolution in favor of reinstating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370, which granted special autonomy to the region, was abrogated by the current government in 2019. According to PM Modi, the MVA’s support for its reinstatement reflects a disregard for national integration. He further added that the alliance had questioned the imposition of the Indian Constitution in the Union Territory, positioning the BJP as a party steadfast in its commitment to the country's sovereignty and unity.
As the campaign in Maharashtra intensifies, these statements mark a clear attempt by the BJP to position itself as the defender of unity and tradition, contrasting sharply with the MVA’s alleged appeasement politics.
