VARANASI | Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a large gathering of farmers at the ‘Kisan Utsav’ in Varanasi, announced the transfer of ₹21,000 crore to the bank accounts of over 10 crore farmers across India under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme. The direct benefit transfer aims to provide financial assistance to small and marginal farmers to support their agricultural needs and livelihoods.
“This grand Kisan Utsav is a celebration of our farmer brothers and sisters. Today, ₹21,000 crore has been transferred directly into the accounts of 10 crore farmers across the nation,” Modi said, underscoring his government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and efficiency in delivering welfare benefits.
Highlighting the spiritual significance of Varanasi, he added, “And when something goes from Kashi, it automatically becomes ‘prasad’.” He remarked that this financial support from the sacred city of Kashi symbolized not just monetary aid, but a sacred offering towards the upliftment of India’s farming community.
The PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, launched in 2019, provides eligible farmers with financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year in three equal instalments. Modi noted that through the consistent efforts of his government, crores of farmers have benefited from the scheme, which has been critical in addressing their immediate financial needs, especially for small landholders.
The Prime Minister also reiterated his government's focus on empowering farmers through infrastructure development, modern agricultural practices, and digital connectivity. “Our farmers are the backbone of the nation, and a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) cannot be achieved without ensuring their prosperity,” he said.
