Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday expressed concern over the Indian government’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, calling it an unfortunate move that could escalate tensions between India and Pakistan.

Speaking on the issue, Mehbooba said, “Our Chief Minister Omar sahab knows that both countries have come back from the brink of war, with the intervention of the United States. Many of our people have been martyred here, many villages destroyed. After so much destruction, there is now some relief.”

She criticized the proposal to build the Tulbul Navigation Barrage in the context of the treaty’s suspension, calling it “a provocation.” “We should say things that increase peace; we should not say things that cause provocation,” she added.

Mehbooba also referenced former leaders, noting that when Omar Abdullah was Union Minister, former CM Farooq Abdullah had gifted seven power projects to Delhi. She urged New Delhi to reconsider its stance and also called on Pakistan to rethink its suspension of the Simla Agreement.

“We should resolve our issues bilaterally,” she emphasized, advocating dialogue and peaceful engagement over confrontation.
