New Delhi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday raised concerns over the Central and Maharashtra governments' decision to appeal the Bombay High Court’s recent acquittal of 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. His remarks came after the Supreme Court stayed the High Court verdict while directing that the acquitted individuals not be arrested again.
Addressing the media, Owaisi remarked, “The SC has put a stay on the HC judgement and said that the accused who were released after 18 years will not be arrested again. I want to ask the Central government and Maharashtra government—why are you putting this appeal when they have walked out as completely innocent?”
The 2006 Mumbai suburban train bombings, which claimed over 180 lives and injured hundreds, led to the arrest and prolonged trial of multiple individuals, some of whom spent nearly two decades in jail before being acquitted.
Drawing a parallel, Owaisi also questioned the consistency of legal actions in high-profile terror cases. “I also want to ask, if the accused of the Malegaon blast, which is reserved for judgement, are acquitted, will you appeal then also?” he asked.
