Delhi: Speaking at the 165th anniversary celebration of the Income Tax Department, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman praised the significant increase in new taxpayers this year. She highlighted that 58.57 lakh Income Tax Returns (ITRs) were filed by first-time tax filers, marking a notable expansion of the tax base.
Minister Sitharaman expressed her appreciation for the new taxpayers, noting that their participation reflects India's growing formalization and compliance with tax regulations. “The increase in new net additions of taxpayers is a commendable achievement,” she said. “This progress demonstrates that India is becoming more formalized, with more people engaging in tax compliance and contributing to the nation's economy.”
