Mumbai: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, India’s first bullet train corridor, has recorded a major breakthrough with the completion of a 5 km tunnel constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra.

The tunnel forms part of a 21 km underground section of the corridor, which also includes a 7 km stretch under Thane Creek. The NATM tunnel marks one of the first key underground completions for the project, paving the way for further progress on the high-speed line.

Officials said that while NATM was used for this 5 km portion, the remaining 16 km of tunnelling in the underground segment will be carried out using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The Thane Creek portion, which will feature India’s first undersea tunnel for a bullet train, is regarded as one of the most challenging engineering components of the project.
