Modi Ally Hails Military Strikes, Vows to “Eradicate Terrorism from Its Roots”

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, a close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, voiced strong support for the Indian military's strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, declaring it a justified response to last month’s deadly attack on civilians in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Shah wrote, “#OperationSindoor is Bharat’s response to the brutal killing of our innocent brothers in Pahalgam.” The statement referenced the massacre of 26 civilians—mostly tourists—in the picturesque Pahalgam region, which New Delhi has blamed on Pakistan-based militant groups. Islamabad has denied any involvement.

Shah, widely regarded as the second most powerful person in India, praised the military's actions and reinforced the government's stance on national security. “The Modi government is resolved to give a befitting response to any attack on India and its people. Bharat remains firmly committed to eradicating terrorism from its roots,” he said.

Operation Sindoor, a 25-minute aerial assault conducted early Wednesday, targeted sites linked to Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, militant groups long accused of operating from Pakistani territory. Indian officials claim the strikes were guided by intelligence and avoided military or civilian infrastructure. Pakistan, however, reported at least 26 civilian deaths and claimed it shot down five Indian fighter jets—an assertion India has not confirmed.
