Imphal: On December 31, 2024, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh publicly apologized for the ethnic violence that has plagued the state since May 2023. Addressing the media in Imphal, Singh expressed profound regret for the turmoil that has resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of approximately 60,000 individuals.

"This entire year has been very unfortunate," Singh stated. "I feel regret and I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what is happening till today, since last May 3. Many people lost their loved ones. Many people left their homes. I really feel regret. I would like to apologise."

The violence, primarily between the majority Meitei and tribal Kuki communities, erupted following a court order to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education, traditionally enjoyed by the Kuki people, to the Meitei population. This decision intensified existing tensions over land, resources, and political representation, leading to widespread unrest.

Despite ongoing peace efforts, sporadic attacks and killings have persisted. However, Singh noted progress towards peace in recent months and expressed optimism for the future. "Now, I hope after seeing the last 3-4 months' progress towards peace, I hope that with the New Year 2025, normalcy and peace will be restored in the state," he said.

The Chief Minister appealed to all communities within Manipur to move beyond past grievances and work collectively towards a harmonious future. "I want to appeal to all the communities of the state that whatever happened has happened. We now have to forget past mistakes and have to start a new life. A peaceful Manipur, a prosperous Manipur, we should all live together,"he urged.
