Amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media and a surge in cybercrimes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling for immediate legislative and policy interventions to tackle the menace. In her letter dated July 3, 2025, Banerjee emphasized the urgent need to address the “rising impact of provocative social media content and cybercrime” across the country.
“The proliferation of provocative content, often laced with communal undertones and criminal intent, poses a serious threat to social harmony and public order,” the letter states. Banerjee called for stringent legal provisions that could serve as a deterrent against such acts, urging the central government to enact robust laws to deal with the evolving nature of digital threats.
She noted that existing laws are inadequate in addressing the scale and sophistication of cyber-enabled offenses, particularly those aimed at spreading misinformation, inciting violence, or targeting individuals and communities. Banerjee also flagged the role of anonymous and coordinated campaigns, often operating from across state or national boundaries, which complicate enforcement efforts.
