NEW DELHI | Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, addressing a mega legal conclave on constitutional challenges in the capital, expressed grave concern over what he described as a persistent threat to India’s Constitution. Emphasizing that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but the “soul of Indian democracy,” Kharge accused the BJP and RSS of attempting to undermine its foundational values.

“The BJP and RSS want to remove the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ from the Preamble of the Constitution. They see these principles as obstacles to their ideological agenda,” Kharge alleged. He claimed that had the BJP secured over 400 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, they would have proceeded to amend the Constitution in a way that would have fundamentally altered India’s democratic framework.

Kharge praised the electorate for denying the BJP a supermajority, attributing the outcome to a collective effort led by Rahul Gandhi. “It’s because of your vigilance and the relentless efforts of Rahul Gandhi Ji that the BJP’s designs were thwarted. The people of India gave them a befitting reply. It’s a tight slap on their face,” Kharge said.

He urged legal professionals and civil society to remain alert and proactive in safeguarding constitutional values. “We must all realize that the Constitution is under continuous attack. It is not a one-time battle but a sustained struggle to protect democracy, social justice, and secularism,” he added.
