Jamia Millia Islamia Suspends MoUs with Turkish Institutions Citing National Security Concerns

By A Staff Reporter

In a decisive move reflecting heightened national security concerns, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a premier central university in New Delhi, has suspended all existing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Türkiye. The university announced the suspension on its official social media channels, stating, "Due to national security considerations, any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and any institution affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Türkiye stands suspended with immediate effect, until further orders. Jamia Millia Islamia stands firmly with the Nation."

This action aligns with similar decisions by other Indian universities. Notably, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) recently suspended its academic and research collaboration with Inonu University in Türkiye, citing national security concerns amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. JNU's suspension followed reports of Türkiye's support for Pakistan during recent conflicts, including the provision of military aid and drones allegedly used by Pakistan-based groups in attacks against India .

The backdrop to these developments includes a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, where 26 civilians were killed. The attack, attributed to Pakistan-based groups, prompted India's retaliatory "Operation Sindoor" and heightened scrutiny of international support to Pakistan. Türkiye's alleged military assistance to Pakistan during this period has raised concerns within Indian security and academic circles.

Jamia Millia Islamia, established in 1920 and recognized with an 'A++' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has a history of international collaborations. However, the university's recent decision underscores a commitment to national interests amidst complex geopolitical dynamics.
