Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday hailed the commissioning of two advanced stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, under Project 17A, at Visakhapatnam. The ceremony, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marked a key step in India’s push for indigenous defence production and enhanced maritime capabilities.

In a post on social media, Naidu described the occasion as a “proud milestone” for both India and Andhra Pradesh. He noted that the two warships, built with over 75 per cent indigenous content, stand as a testament to the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. He further highlighted the role of hundreds of domestic micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in supporting the project.

“These world-class frigates embody the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and showcase the rising maritime importance of our eastern seaboard. INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri will boost the Navy’s combat strength while reaffirming India’s commitment to self-reliance in warship design and construction,” Naidu said.
