India has reported over 1,000 active COVID-19 cases amid a noticeable rise in infections across several states. In the past week alone, the country recorded 752 new cases, with the highest numbers reported in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi, according to government data released on Monday, May 26.
Kerala accounted for 335 fresh infections, bringing its active case count to 430. Maharashtra and Delhi reported 153 and 99 new cases respectively, raising their active cases to 209 and 104. Other states witnessing an uptick include Gujarat with 83 cases, Karnataka with 47, Uttar Pradesh with 15, and West Bengal with 12.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta addressed public concerns, stating, “There is no need to panic about the surge and our hospitals are fully prepared. We have details of the COVID-19 cases. Our hospitals have all the facilities. We have also issued an advisory.”
Adding to the evolving situation, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) reported the detection of two new COVID-19 variants — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 — prompting increased vigilance among health authorities.
