New Delhi: The Department of Posts, Government of India, announced the resumption of full postal services to the United States, effective 15th October 2025, following temporary restrictions imposed in August due to changes in U.S. customs regulations.
Earlier, consequent to U.S. Administration Executive Order No. 14324 dated 30th July 2025, the duty-free de minimis exemption for goods valued up to $800 was terminated from 29th August 2025. As a result, all dutiable international postal items destined for the USA, regardless of value, became subject to customs duty under the International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) framework. Consequently, India Post had suspended bookings for all mail types—except documents/letter cards and gift items up to $100—starting 25th August 2025.

Under the latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) guidelines, customs duties on postal shipments from India will now be applied at a flat rate of 50% of the declared Free on Board (FOB) value, with no additional base or product-specific duties. This streamlined approach reduces the duty burden on exporters and enhances the price competitiveness of Indian sellers using postal channels.
The resumption marks India Post’s first operational deployment of the Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) solution, allowing upfront duty collection at the time of booking. This ensures that recipients in the USA receive consignments without any additional charges or customs delays, making the postal route a cost-effective, compliant option for MSMEs, artisans, and small e-commerce businesses targeting the U.S. market.
