The opposition coalition, known as the INDIA alliance, has announced the nomination of former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the Vice President of India. The decision was taken after consultations among member parties, with the alliance seeking to project a consensus nominee for the constitutional post.

Justice Reddy, who began his judicial career in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, went on to serve as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2008. He retired from the apex court in 2011, having presided over a range of constitutional and legal matters. His career is noted for judgments that touched upon issues of social and economic justice as well as the protection of fundamental rights.

The Vice President of India serves as the second-highest constitutional authority in the country and is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The election, conducted by the Election Commission of India, involves voting by members of both Houses of Parliament.
