Delhi — In light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases across India, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl addressed public concerns, outlining the current situation and ongoing surveillance efforts.

“Cases have been rising, first in southern India, then in western India, and now in northern India,” Dr. Bahl said, noting the geographic progression of the infections. He explained that the situation is being closely monitored through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP), which tracks COVID-19 cases nationwide.

Dr. Bahl highlighted three critical factors that experts are assessing. First is the transmissibility of the virus and the speed at which cases are increasing. Second is whether the virus is evading existing immunity—either natural or vaccine-induced. “If a new variant emerges, it may affect previous immunity, but at the moment, there is nothing to be worried about,” he assured.

Third, the severity of cases is under scrutiny, particularly whether serious illness is occurring in individuals without underlying health conditions. So far, Dr. Bahl noted, the severity remains low.

He concluded with a message of cautious optimism: “There’s no cause for panic. We should remain vigilant and always be prepared.” The remarks underscore the ongoing efforts by health authorities to manage and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 while maintaining public calm.
