Amid escalating tensions between Punjab and Haryana over the ongoing water-sharing dispute, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has made a public appeal urging that essential needs like drinking water should not become a political battleground.

In a statement addressing the current impasse, Saini emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the issue. “I believe that there should not be politics over drinking water. It has been our tradition to welcome people with a glass of water. I didn't know that the politics would put a question mark on it,” he said, highlighting the cultural and ethical importance of water-sharing.

Reiterating Haryana’s demand, the Chief Minister clarified that the request was not for individual benefit, but for the welfare of society at large. “We are not asking for water for one person, but for the entire society. We want the amount of water as it has been given,” he added.

Saini also stressed the need for dialogue and cooperation, saying his government is ready to engage with leaders across political lines to find a solution. “We will talk to all the leaders. It is unfortunate to stop the water. People of Punjab also understand this — it is not a subject of politics, but to offer water to people.”

With temperatures soaring during the summer season, Haryana’s call for rightful water allocation has taken on added urgency. Saini concluded his remarks with a direct appeal to Punjab: “The summer is ongoing, we needed water. I want to say to Punjab to give water to us.”
