Gandhinagar: Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel addressed concerns regarding the Chandipura virus, which has been reported in several areas of the state. "Chandipura virus cases have come up at several places in the state. There is no need to be scared, but we need to be cautious," Patel stated. He clarified that Chandipura is not a new virus, with the first case recorded in Maharashtra in 1965. The virus is vector-borne, transmitted by sandflies, and primarily affects children aged 9 months to 14 years, especially in rural areas. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, loose motion, and headache.

Patel advised consulting a doctor if these symptoms are observed. Currently, nine cases have been reported across four districts in Gujarat, along with three cases involving individuals from other states residing in Gujarat. While there have been six deaths, it is not yet confirmed if they are due to the Chandipura virus. Samples have been sent to Pune for further analysis. More than 400 houses and 19,000 people have been screened. Patel reassured that the disease is not contagious and urged the public to remain vigilant.
